Shigeru Uchida (1943–2016) was an interior designer who designed not only the physical atmosphere of a space but also the very flow of time within it. A world-renowned designer representing Japan, he was a leading figure in the Japanese modern design scene from the latter half of the 20th century through the 2000s.

Uchida’s design philosophy—garnering high acclaim both in Japan and abroad for his diverse work spanning commercial spaces, architecture, furniture, and lighting—continues to exert a profound influence on numerous spatial design and architectural projects today.

This article explores his career and design philosophy, while also highlighting the appeal of the "Paper Moon" lighting series—a masterpiece created in collaboration with Asano Shoten, a long-established lantern manufacturer founded in 1917.

Shigeru Uchida: Career and Design Philosophy

Shigeru Uchida was a master designer responsible for numerous iconic works, ranging from Yohji Yamamoto boutiques and the Kobe Fashion Museum to the comprehensive spatial design of hotels such as Hotel Il Palazzo and Mojiko Hotel.

He was also renowned for his approach of elevating traditional Japanese concepts into contemporary designs, as exemplified by tea houses like *Ju-an*, *So-an*, and *Gyo-an*.

His distinguished career is evidenced by a multitude of accolades, including the Mainichi Design Award, the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.

At the heart of his design philosophy lay a uniquely Japanese aesthetic—one that seeks to blend quietly into a space without being overly assertive—and a commitment to creating a comfortable sense of "negative space" (*yohaku*) within an environment.

He went beyond the mere pursuit of functional or formal beauty, placing great importance on crafting spaces that embrace the atmosphere and the time shared by the people who gather there.

The Birth of Asano Shoten and the "Paper Moon" Series

[Background of Development] The Origins of the Collaboration with Shigeru Uchida

For over a century, Asano Shoten Co., Ltd. has been crafting "Gifu Chochin" (Gifu lanterns)—a nationally designated traditional craft—in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture.

In the late 1990s, Asano Shoten began exploring new possibilities for Gifu lanterns. Recognizing the unique characteristics of their manufacturing techniques, the company sought to develop products that leveraged this expertise while suiting modern lifestyles.

They aimed to create new products that applied this exceptional craftsmanship, all while continuing to produce the traditional lanterns used during the Obon festival.

An opportunity to commission a design arose when Shigeru Uchida visited Gifu to serve on the selection committee for the "Oribe Project"—an initiative led by Gifu Prefecture to honor individuals dedicated to creative endeavors. Asano Shoten was able to share its vision with him, leading to the collaboration.

[Technical Challenges and Dedication] The Craftspeople's Trial and Error in Creating "Paper Moon"

While upholding the meticulous techniques of bamboo-strip winding and paper application practiced by skilled artisans, the company has also proactively pursued technical innovations to adapt to changing times.

Shigeru Uchida sought a form that transcended the conventional boundaries of the *chochin* (traditional Japanese lantern). To beautifully realize this vision, the methods of winding the bamboo strips and applying the *washi* (Japanese paper) underwent countless refinements.

The technique of creating graceful, taut curves—while accounting for the natural tension of the delicate bamboo strips—was perfected through the manual skill of master artisans and persistent trial and error.

The "Paper Moon" series was born in 1998 from the fusion of Asano Shoten’s advanced craftsmanship and Shigeru Uchida’s design aesthetic.

When Asano Shoten first approached Uchida for the design, they requested a product that leveraged traditional lantern techniques but offered the convenience of modern lighting—ideally, a piece with a timeless design worthy of the lantern's heritage.

Uchida focused on the combination of *washi* and bamboo strips to capture the lightness and serenity of paper-based lighting; he also devised a structure that concealed the internal framework as much as possible when the light was on. Thanks to the inherent durability of the *kozo* (mulberry fiber) *washi* used, he was able to achieve the desired balance of light translucency and structural longevity.

Thus, "Paper Moon" was designed as a form of indirect lighting that harmonizes with contemporary residential and commercial spaces, all while remaining grounded in the traditional structural principles of Gifu lanterns.
