Have you ever received cut hydrangeas only to have them wilt very quickly? Actually, hydrangeas can last much longer if you know the proper way to prepare them for watering.

Hi, this is Miwako, manager of KOZLIFE♪ The hydrangeas my mother grew in my family's garden are in full bloom again this year, so I had some cut. I've already put some up in the office. In this article, I'll introduce the three steps I use every year to prepare hydrangeas for watering, and my recommended way to display them using a flower vase from Cooee Design!

To make cut hydrangeas last longer, the "3 steps to water absorption" are everything.

The key to making cut hydrangeas last longer lies in "water absorption" before displaying them. Simply following these three steps—diagonal cut, removing the pith, and inverting the stems—will dramatically improve their longevity. These three steps are what I've been practicing every year for over 10 years of decorating with hydrangeas. Just remember these three points, and you'll be fine!

Why cut hydrangeas wilt so quickly: It's because they don't absorb water easily.

The reason why cut hydrangeas wilt so quickly lies in the structure of their stems. Inside the stems is a spongy tissue called "pith," which blocks the water pathways, weakening the stem's ability to absorb water.

Actually, hydrangeas are flowers that "love rain and water."

Hydrangeas are a representative flower of the rainy season. They love rain, so giving them plenty of water is the secret to their health. Haven't you ever seen hydrangeas planted in your garden blooming vibrantly on a rainy day? Even with cut flowers, it's important to intentionally create the same environment for them.

KOZLIFE's 3-Step Hydrangea Watering Method: Cutting Back and Upside-Down Watering are Key

The method I use every year to prepare hydrangeas for watering is just three simple steps. You don't need any special tools; all you need are scissors and a bucket, and you can start today. The key is to follow the steps in the correct order!

STEP 1: Why cut the stem diagonally?

Cutting the stems at a 45-degree angle, rather than straight, increases the surface area, improving their ability to absorb water. Cutting the stems underwater ("underwater cutting") is even more effective, as it prevents air from entering the cut end and maintains a clear path for water. It's recommended to repeat this trimming every 2-3 days after placing the flowers in a vase.

STEP 2: What happens when you remove the pith (cotton) from the stem?

Using a thin object, scrape out the pith (spongy cottony tissue) from the diagonally cut end of the stem. The thin end of chopsticks or a toothpick will work. Removing the cottony tissue ensures that water can properly pass through, significantly increasing water absorption. Skipping this step will cause the plant to wilt quickly, so be sure to do it even if it's a bit of a hassle!

STEP 3: Upside-down float in the Omniutti for 1 hour—what are the effects?

The final step in getting hydrangeas fresh is "upside-down watering." Fill a deep bucket or container (I love using an Omniutti ♪) with water, turn the hydrangeas upside down, and soak them for about an hour. Because the water reaches the entire stem against gravity, the flowers become firm and vibrant. I was surprised when I first saw this, but it's really effective! I'm amazed every year (lol).

Once the flowers are ready, arrange them in a Cooee Design vase! | What kind of vase suits hydrangeas?

Once the flowers have absorbed the water, it's time to display them. Ideally, you'd want to arrange them in your favorite vase and enjoy them as part of your interior decor. The vase I personally use is from the Swedish brand "Cooee Design".

Why do Cooee Design's flower vases look so good with hydrangeas?

Cooee Design's flower vases are characterized by their organic forms and matte texture. Their design complements any floral material without being overpowering, enhancing the beauty of the flowers. They pair particularly well with the soft volume of hydrangeas, and even a single hydrangea in a small vase creates a beautiful display.

The design, imbued with Scandinavian simplicity and aesthetics, blends surprisingly well not only with Nordic interiors but also with Japanese aesthetics.

Whether you use one or divide it into several, it's all good—what's the best way to display it?

Even a single hydrangea stem provides plenty of volume and makes a beautiful picture. On the other hand, dividing a large plant into two or three sections and arranging them in vases of different sizes adds movement to the space and makes it even more visually appealing as interior decor.

In my case, I lined up several Cooee Design vases in my office and arranged flowers in each of them, as they were different sizes and heights. I enjoyed the variety of types and color gradations, and it really lifted my spirits, even during the rainy season!

I look forward to it every year | Miwako's family home hydrangea story

Let me share a little about myself here. Actually, the hydrangeas at my parents' house have a history of over 10 years (laughs).

A Mother's Day gift from over 10 years ago has now grown into a garden full of hydrangeas.

It all started over 10 years ago on Mother's Day. At the time, I gave my mother a potted hydrangea as a gift. My mother planted it in the ground and took great care of it, and now every year during the rainy season, it fills the garden with flowers. Once planted in the ground, hydrangeas take root and grow larger year after year, so it has grown to a volume that is incomparable to the original potted plant.

When I went to my parents' house this year, there were so many flowers in bloom that I thought, "This might be my favorite time of year!"

A mysterious flower that makes you want to go out into the garden when it's damp and humid during the rainy season.

During the rainy season, we tend to stay indoors, don't we? But when hydrangeas are blooming in the garden, even in the rain, it makes us want to go out and enjoy the scenery. Hydrangeas with raindrops on them are exceptionally beautiful, and it makes me feel like I can even like this damp season a little. We've had some cut flowers made and displayed them in the office, so all the staff are enjoying the rainy season together.

Summary | Try decorating your home with cut hydrangeas during the rainy season.

To summarize what we've covered today:

The longevity of cut hydrangeas depends on how they are "received in water."

・Just follow these 3 steps (cut diagonally → remove guts → invert and soak for 1 hour).

・Place them in your favorite vase and enjoy them as interior decor.

Cooee Design's base is a Scandinavian design that enhances the volume of hydrangeas.

The rainy season can be gloomy with all the rain, but just adding a single hydrangea can instantly brighten up a room. Why not try adding some cut hydrangeas to your home this rainy season?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. How long do cut hydrangeas last?

A. If properly prepared, they can be enjoyed for approximately 5 to 10 days (this may vary depending on room temperature and water cleanliness). Changing the water daily and trimming the stems every 2 to 3 days will help them last longer.

Q. What is the method of "reverse landing"?

A. This method involves immersing the hydrangeas upside down in a bucket or deep container filled with water. Gravity helps the water reach the entire stem. Soaking for about an hour is a good guideline.

Q. What kind of flower vase is suitable for hydrangeas?

A. Because hydrangeas are voluminous, a vase with a wide opening is easier to use. Also, a vase with a matte texture and a simple design, like those from Cooee Design, is recommended as it will highlight the colors of the hydrangeas.

Q. Can Omniutti be used to help flowers absorb water?

A. Yes! The Omniutti is deep and has a large capacity, making it very convenient for inverting and draining fish. I use it every year. You can also use it as a trash can or laundry basket, so it's definitely worth having.
